Why therapy is important to address torticollis
Torticollis is a condition that causes the head to rotate and tilt to one side. It can be congenital (from birth) or acquired (from positioning). Most frequently it occurs in infants but it can also affect older children or even adults. If not addressed, it could cause limitations in neck movement or possible long term postural abnormalities. But if addressed early, it can often be successfully remedied within a few sessions and most importantly, prevented from progressing in severity in the first place. Thankfully, medical doctors are becoming increasingly aware that addressing this condition early is of the utmost importance and now frequently assess at routine baby wellness checkups, but an experienced licensed physical therapist can provide skilled screenings and assessments at any time to address issues promptly and effectively.
Why getting intervention can be difficult
Torticollis is also often associated with other congenital or acquired conditions involving flattening of the head called Plagiocephaly or Brachycephaly. A very successful intervention for these conditions is a cranial remolding helmet--and the sooner one can be attained, the more successful the intervention and the shorter duration of intervention required. However, insurances may require proof of PT intervention before they will even authorize or help pay for one. And setting up appointments can sometimes have significant delays with awaiting doctor referrals, insurance authorizations, and wait lists at PT clinics--this can be so frustrating when time is of the essence in addressing your needs!
